Who this is for
- Anyone sourcing a physical product for the first time, for a business or a single project.
What you need

Overview
Supplier research goes wrong when it is unstructured: forty browser tabs, no comparison, no way to tell candidates apart. This playbook forces structure at every step, ending with a verified, comparable shortlist.
Phases
- 1
Define product requirements
Goal: Write a specification precise enough to get comparable quotes.

- Document material, size, color options, packaging, and any required markings.
- 2
Define supplier criteria
Goal: Know what actually matters for your decision.
Actions
- List your must-haves (MOQ ceiling, certifications, region) versus nice-to-haves.
- 3
Research legitimate sources
Goal: Search beyond the first page of one marketplace.
Milestones
- Product specification written.
- Ten or more candidates contacted with identical questions.
- Comparison sheet completed with real answers.
- Samples ordered from top candidates.
- Final shortlist of three to five suppliers.

FAQ
Does a supplier database guarantee a good supplier?
No. It organizes your research and comparison, it does not verify quality or legitimacy on its own. Samples, direct questions, and your own verification still matter.
How many suppliers should I contact to start?
Somewhere around eight to twelve is usually enough to get several comparable quotes without the process becoming unmanageable.
